2Moons 2 – Yes or No?

So recently 2moons 2 The series released a pre-episode 00 with some more content and interviews.

Let me tell you here and now, I was never a hater of the new series but I had my doubts. All the fans are used to the original cast and I doubted we could just start anew with such little time between both seasons. The chemistry and the new cast had to be amazing to make the series worthwhile. Today I’m here to write about episode 00 and what to expect from season 2 of the series and what I think about the new series now after watching it.

Where does the story start?

Right when they announced a new season everyone got excited, then they announced they were casting all the main actors anew and everyone started wondering would the story start out from the beginning? Were they gonna start where season one ended?

g2qbvf

Well, in episode 00 we finally got an answer: we are gonna re-watch some scenes from the first season with the new actors while the series will include a lot of new story. Also this time, as it has been announced some time ago, will include more about all three couples. Including all three couples and there love lines is probably one of the biggest differences to the previous seasons and might give the series a whole different story pace, especially as the previous one was pretty slow paced. This time it will feature the soft PhaYo, the cheeky MingKit and the passionate ForthBeam love lines but as I saw from some scenes we are getting quite some different story. While the beginning might be the same, this time they are going a little bit farther with the story, meaning we do see MingKit finally getting much closer, we see PhaYo fight through their jealousy and…well, we didn’t see anything about ForthBeam before so that will be a new thing in general.

Since I’m a big fan of the ForthBeam story line but the couples in general, I cannot wait to see all three on screen.

Do the characters change with the new cast?

Easy answer: yes. When I first saw the new cast I didn’t feel much. They seemed to have lifeless acting and it didn’t really assure me we are gonna get anything from the new series, so I think it was a good idea to make this episode 00 because I did change my opinion. Of course, I cannot judge everything from just a few scenes but the scenes I saw seemed good and finally I got some feelings from them (maybe it was because before you didn’t see them actually talk a lot in any of the teasers? 🙂 )

50kpzf

Of course, with the new cast the characters are bound to change a little bit. Pha seems to be a lot more cold when he’s cold and a lot more soft when he’s soft. So he’s even more different depending on who he’s dealing with. One big thing that seems to be different is him not being a total softie when dealing with Wayo. Pha in the previous season went total softie when he finally realized who Wayo was but I think in this season, also because there is more story and not just them getting closer and closer, Pha also has more back bone when it comes to Wayo. When you think “oh so they’re not gonna be lovey dovey” think again, I do think they will still include that and there will be scenes to giggle our hearts out. I like Pha’s change I have to admit, since I’m a big fan of all-consuming love lines that still say when something is wrong or bothering them.

As for MingKit, I think they changed the most. This time Kit isn’t just the senior being pushed around by his junior and not being able to deal with his feelings straight out but he also seems to really be Ming’s senior and have some air of seniority about him. That was one of the things I did not like about the previous season: while I loved the cheekiness between them, Ming just kind of went over Kit and it was not noticeable at all, that Kit should have been more grown-up and Ming’s senior. This time Ming still seems to be the more active and cheeky part in the relationship but you feel that he gives more respect to Kit and the relationship seems a lot more serious and grown-up then before where it was mostly playful.

I like that change because it gives a whole new side to the characters but also to the couple in general. Also I love the the doctors gang around Pha seem to be a lot closer and more equal than before. Before it seemed like Pha was the number one and the others were “just” amazing but this time they seem to be closer as friends and actually joke around with each other more.

kxqj8f

As for Forth and Beam. I don’t know if we haven’t seen many of Beam’s playboy scenes or if they did turn it down a notch. In the interviews they said he is still a playboy but well, we’ll see. As for Forth he seems less like a love-struck puppy strolling around Wayo and more bad boyish and grown-up. But behind all that mature charm there is still some sentimentality and softness. I think it’s gonna be interesting to see them act together and what they make of it. I cannot really judge about them here, because their teaser scenes weren’t much and their story is the one that is most changed for the new season since they didn’t really do much previously.

Do they have chemistry?

Surprisingly they do. Before watching the special episode I thought they didn’t have any but after watching the interviews and teaser scenes from the episode it seems quite good. The cast seems to get along well with each other and seem comfortable and the scenes seem mostly natural and go along with their characters.

x1080-1s2

Overall, is it worth a watch?

Before watching the special episode I’d have worried whether I should watch or not. I just didn’t feel the special factor with the new cast but after watching the special episode my doubts kind of went away (mostly) and I’ll definitely check out the new series and give it a chance. So I’m definitely gonna check out like the first four episodes and then decide from then on whether I like it or not and I would recommend the same to everyone else. Let’s give them a chance especially because it does look good and promising. Also the cast and series got the okay from Chiffon Cake herself, so 😉

For all the international fans who want to watch, apparently it is being released here: Mello Thailand Youtube
The series starts airing on June 29th.

Review: Boys in the Trees

When you are subscribed to any streaming service you always get recommendations, some are just your scene, others are totally not what you are looking for. And sometimes the recommendation sections knows better than you think. Boys in the Trees is absolutely not what I imagined I’d be watching but it was recommended and the reviews were quite good so I decided to watch it. In the end it turns out, the movie is a hidden gem. Why? Read on and find out.

Boys in the Trees – General information

Before you throw this movie aside since you don’t like scary movies, just know, it is not. Not really. There are some jump scares or scary scenes but nothing that will keep you from sleeping at night. The movie is quite heavy though.

Boys in the Trees is a 2016 fantasy-coming of age movie from Australia and is directed by Nicholas Verso. It stars Toby Wallace, Gulliver McGrath, Mitzi Ruhlmann and Justin Holborow. The movie tells the story of the skater Corey who usually hangs out with his skater buddies, namely Jango. Being friends with them takes quite a toll on him especially because they tend to bully Corey’s former best friend and outsider Jonah. The story is set in 1997 Halloween night and about a night of fantasy and scares when Corey decides to spend some time with Jonah while also growing closer to the serious girl Romany and keeping his distance from Jango.

The casting and the characters

The cast did a lot better than what I expected when I read the reviews. I totally expected a low budget movie without good acting. I got something different though. The acting in the movie is amazing. Especially Toby Wallace as Corey and Gulliver McGrath as Jonah show great acting and really bring their characters to life on screen. They totally convince in their roles and make you feel with them.

boys_in_the_trees_4-h_2016

One unusual thing about Boys in the Trees compared to other movies, it shows good and bad sides to all their characters. Corey is not just the good guy who befriended the wrong crowd, Jonah is not just the victim who just wants his best friend back, Romany is not just a grown up girl but has a temper too and Jango is not just a bully but also has things he cares about.

Jonah, while you always find new sides to him, has a little bit of character development, for Corey he mostly has to work through his personal problems during the Halloween night. Jango probably has the most character development I admit. Romany, I have to say though, doesn’t have much character development. She is mostly there as a side character who just says bluntly what Corey is already thinking. Overall though, the characters just kind of grew on you even if they had bad characteristics too.

The premise and story

The story packs quite the punch. It features a lot of slower scenes but it all fits together. Just 10 minutes in you already get that something is going on you don’t know about yet but really getting it is…well, you can sometimes guess but you will still get a little bit of a shock in the end. I present more about my theory of the movie down below, but since there would be spoilers I won’t post it right here.

thelasttimeisawrichard

The movie works with metaphors and symbolism a lot but also sometimes twists the story around and you have to guess what everything means. I’m quite sure everyone has their own theories about the movie.

The story enchants and catches you though. Mainly because you really want to know where it is going. If it was usual it would be Corey hanging out with Jonah for Halloween and then cutting his friendship with Jango off but this movie is unusual so that’s not what happens. It is kind of ironic though that the story is fantasy related while the actions of the characters seem a lot more realistic than with some other movies.

The fantasy in general is kept as an underlying element. The main focus lies on the backstory of the characters, then comes the fantasy.

My theories about the movie

SPOILERS

This movie lets you build a hundred different theories. I have a few of my own though.
Around the beginning you see Jonah around the water where he later on leads Corey to discover his dead body. I think that was the moment he did die but since there is some fantasy in the movie, I do think he or his ghost did stay. Mainly because he wanted to help his friend see that he cannot continue on following Jango and his buddies but Corey had to start making choices of his own. Even if they grew apart, Jonah definitely still cares for his best friend and while he does tease Corey a lot he definitely wants the best for him.

Corey on the other hand has to work through his childhood drama of abandoning Jonah when he needed him most. It says a lot that while that happened Jonah still cares for his friend. You see that Jonah might not like what happened and also have to deal with the aftermath, he does not directly give the fault to Corey but seems to kind of understand that they were still scared kids.

mv5bztbmotnkmmytmzaxny00owyyltk2owqtmdy4mzm0nzbmoge1xkeyxkfqcgdeqxvymteznzczma4040._v1_

As for the man in white and the ceremony in the movie. I think since Jonah was dead, Death (the man in white) came looking to take him away but Jonah wanted to stay and help his friend. Around the end Jonah understood that he could not stay and finally accepted what happened but was also happier since he could help Corey. So in the end he goes with Death and disappears. I think the ceremony was mostly symbolism to hint at Jonah being dead.

I think it is amazing how someone like Jonah, who experienced such a horrible thing as a child, still cared for his friend so deeply that he stayed even after he died.
I also think that Jango realized over time that Corey was his best friend and meant more to him than he first thought. So he kind of got his stuff together in the end and decided to be there for him and not be a jerk. Maybe there is a romantic aspect for him there but that could also just be my BL mind speaking 🙂

Overall conclusion and review

Boys in the Trees is definitely a hidden gem and throws some stuff at you that you just have to think about and find out on your own what it means. It is quite a heavy movie though, so beware of that. I do like that it is not just a scary movie but has an actual story line.

The characters could be real people and don’t act totally fictional and while others might say it is low budget, I do think the images were good and had enough to be a believable movie and not scare people away with cheap images and directing. Not, it definitely is a good, even if heavy, movie.

Ending and Ongoing #randomremarks

Here we are again with my new corner of #randomremarks or an update on BL, K-Pop or whatever is going on right now.

Find the rest of the series here: Updates #randomremarks

This time I’ll include a short review of the He’s Coming To Me finale, as well as a short Shazam! review. I know that did not mix well at all but who cares 😉 as for K-Pop…I don’t really have any interesting news there. Not really…there are other BL news though.

tumblr_nx8134wndt1uk6qtlo1_500

He’s Coming To Me – Finale *spoilers*

So we just got our long expected (it was only 8 episodes but we all felt like we were watching it for so long, admit it) finale of this wonderful series. Did I expect this ending? Not at all. Nope.

I expected it to end badly…like really bad and for me to cry my eyes out. I did cry (a lot) but it was an ending I could rewatch and I won’t scratch this ending from my memory compared to others (yes, I’m talking about stuff like My Bromance The Movie etc.).
It did end really corny and with a lot of questions popping up but on the other end it was like the producers doing just what we wanted them too. They solved the whole mystery surrounding Mes’ death (shock! Did I expect that? I had my suspicions but never though they would go that far o.O ) and gave us a wonderful cry-all-you-want scene. I loved that Than came clean with everyone in the end and told them about Mes, even if he still plays some jokes on them, but still, they are his best friends, and I love how supportive they are. And we got another kiss!

I had my doubts about Singto and Ohm’s chemistry especially because they had to fill some big shoes after SOTUS but they did great. I think that’s partly because there was a total different dynamic between them than between Arthit and Kongpob but also because the actors seem to be pretty comfortable with each other and tbh I enjoyed them together a lot.

coming-04a

Also compliments to Singto for making me forget that Kongpob had the same face 😀 Ohm and Singto both have this energy about them just sucking you into the story and forgetting other stories while watching. Big compliments to all the actors, the writers, the production team and please give us more of them!
And good luck, Khiem, for your new love 😉

Ongoing – check it out

Regarding other news…there aren’t many new things just a few news and me telling you to maybe check out HIStory3: Trap. It has a totally different dynamic than the previous ones, especially because this time they are both grown-ups having a job (or something like a job) and not students or at college. I’m really starting to enjoy it. At first I thought the pace was really slow but it’s actually quite nice paced. I will probably publish a mid-season review too but still. Also, guys, there are three episodes a week, when do we ever get that?

So if they go on like this, it is a worthy installment of the HIStory series, but let’s wait and see 🙂

Note: I still don’t know whether it is named HIStory3: Trap or HIStory3: Trapped though…in the posters it says Trapped but everyone just calls it Trap?!

875d50765a99eb35d3351e7d22cccbe498acc6c2r1-1313-960v2_hq

Another HIStory news: We still don’t have fixed release dates but HIStory3: Miracle will probably come around summer or fall and HIStory2: Boundary Crossing 2 is probably going to be released either the end of this year or its looking at a 2020 release. None of this is a sure thing but just the highest probability I guess.

The Best Twins, another currently airing show, is slowly moving forward and while also giving us one joke after another, the romance is moving along real slow, like reeeeeeaaaaal slow. We do kind of get a picture of where it is going though, so at least we have that.

8ma05qba_400x400

As for What The Duck 2: Final Call…I’m still watching but I gave up every hope of someone being able to save this show. They made this mess and it seems to be impossible to get out of it. I’ll keep you up to date though, so if something interesting happens, I’ll tell you. Let’s see if they manage to save the show, somehow.

Love Beyond Frontier – don’t we know them?

GMMTV released more trailers for their 2019 line up. One of them (even if not a BL series) is Love Beyond Frontier and tbh it looks amazing. In general it seems to be about four people living under one roof and falling in love with the wrong person. Don’t know whether it will end well, but the trailer looks great, funny and serious at the same time and I cannot wait to see all of the actors again! I even know the actresses!!! Excited. Starts May 12th. Here is the trailer, ENG SUBs available

Shazam! – Short and neat

I also recently went to the cinema to watch Shazam! and I did mention before you just need to think of it as a comedy and less as a super hero movie and I still stand by that comment. If you want to compare it to other super hero movies…there is none. This movie is pretty much the funny PG version of Deadpool for DC. And I love it. It is funny and while corny at some points, it has a charm that many other movies don’t have. And also, while Zachary Levi did look strange in this costume (who wouldn’t?) he did great and convinced as the kid in a super hero body. Also compliments to Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer. Both convinced in their roles and definitely gave it their best, I hope I see them in other movies again soon!

And while I do say the film is comedic, it is more serious than I expected it to be in the beginning, so I definitely recommend checking it out 🙂

Otherwise there are no more news I really want to share…maybe I’ll remember something, then I’ll post it with the next #randomremarks though, so this is it for now 😀

giphy

Let me bring you up to date #randomremarks

So I went on a work trip yesterday and I’m going to go on a vacation today. Since I’m not actually taking my computer with me, I don’t know whether I’ll be able to post anything, so here is just a small update about recent shows/songs etc.:

First off, currently there are a few currently airing BL shows. Coming out on top at the moment is definitely He’s Coming To Me, a show we all watch even though we all know it cannot really end well. For everyone who doesn’t know the show – there’s a lonely ghost who doesn’t remember anything about himself or why he’s actually dead, and a young boy (later on young man) who can see ghosts and decides to help the ghost remember. While there was some doubt in the beginning whether it was really a BL show or just a tease as a one-sided BL love, the latest episode (no.5) washed away all doubt. Let’s enjoy the good ride while it lasts because as you may have noticed – one of them is a ghost…as in dead…yeah. The show is awesome though, so I’m definitely gonna continue watching.
Currently airing every Thursday on LINE TV and I think later on on GMMTV.

d083c8nwoaabkyc

Not convincing at all is the currently airing second season of What The Duck: Final Call. So the first season was already a mess and the second season isn’t any better it seems. Last season the only chemistry came from the PreeBo couple and since we won’t get much from them this season it seems…well, the chemistry between everyone else is way off. There is a spark between Bo and Pent but like I said, a spark, no real chemistry yet. Also because Rambo is pretty much a total troublemaker and mess in this season. His moral compass has not changed yet it seems. I heard there were some problems between the actors but seriously, if it would be that serious they shouldn’t make a second season. I am gonna continue watching even just to see if anyone can save this show or if it is gonna sink to the ground of nowhere.
Currently airing every Monday on LINE TV.

Another currently airing show is The Best Twins. To be honest, the chemistry is not awesome but kinda nice. They fit well you could say. Still, I don’t know where this show is headed AT ALL. I am gonna continue watching for all the cute and funny scenes but there’s still this big question mark over my head every time I watch it…
Currently airing every Saturday on LINE TV.

We also finally got the trailer for the third season of HIStory: HIStory3 – Trap. Let me be honest, I did not expect what I saw at all, I expected it to be more like the Obsessed episodes but well, if there are some writers I trust, then it’s the HIStory writers. Cannot wait to watch it – mark it in your calender, start day is April 16th.

No news about HIStory3: That Day or the second season of Boundary Crossing yet…

Another show that just ended and left many fans thanking Thailand for its awesomeness – Great Men Academy. SPOILERS AHEAD

great-men-academy-great-men-academy

To be honest I’ve only suffered once from second lead syndrome and even more, I’ve never seen the second lead actually get the “girl”. Well, GMA gave us just what all the fans wanted. A happy ending no one really expected. For those who don’t know: GMA tells the story of a young girl named Love who fancies one of the best students at Great Men Academy, called Vier. One day she meets the mystical unicorn by the lake and after helping the unicorn she gets a free wish. She wished for her love to be fulfilled and the unicorn allows her to turn into a boy. To get closer to her crush she decides to enroll into GMA and soon learns a lot more about life and love than she could hope for.
But let’s be honest we all just expected them to maybe have an open ending, no one expected that kiss ^.^ well, I’m not complaining, I loved the ending and if there was a second season I’d totally watch it. There probably won’t be one though since it was a project for the 9×9 group.

As for songs, we got a few new releases and a few news. Currently, with all the scandals in Korean entertainment, it is not the best time to be a K-Pop fan I guess, but what to do, I just love the music.

As for new releases, there are a few: We have KARD‘s amazing come back with Bomb Bomb. No one can say the ylaways sound the same after this one ^.^ I totally love the vibe of this one and the music video is really beautiful. VAV‘s Thrilla Killa shows their usual charisma with a little bit of a new vibe and amazing visuals. Also there is IZ*ONE‘s Violeta. I’ve not been a fan of them yet and tbh I won’t become one after that song. It’s good but now my kind of song. We also have the big come back of Black Pink with Kill This Love and I admit I didn’t dislike their songs but also didn’t really favour them much. Kill This Love though…wooo…it’s on replay on my phone already and the music video is nothing less than absolutely awesome. We also have Kang Xiwon with Click Click. The song has a really interesting chorus and kind of a nice melody. It’s kind of stuck in my head….
We also have DALsooobin with Katchup…this one is just really strange but also gets stuck in your head and won’t disappear once you hear it. As for a new rookie we have EVERGLOW with Bon Bon Chocolat. They are delivering a pretty strong debut song so I’m curious what’s gonna come in the future. We also have another strong comeback with Stray KidsMiroh…I did not expect that AT ALL, but I oh-so love it ❤

Let’s see about TV shows…
Since I watch pretty much internationally I’m gonna mention different ones: From South Korea, since we just talked about K-Pop, I have three shows I highly recommend. First, He is Psychometric, starring Jinyoung from GOT7 but also featuring a really nice brother relationship and a few funny but really dramatic scenes. Airing every Monday and Tuesday on tvN. We also have The Fiery Priest, a show that is hard to place but impresses with it’s all around characters, scenes and overall build up. Also if you had told me it was an OCN drama I would have believed you. It is really unlike the usual SBS shows, so check it out. Airing every Friday and Saturday on SBS. My biggest recommendation, though, is Kill It. Every other year we Kdrama fans need a show like City Hunter or also Healer. Kill It has a very similar vibe to that with the difference that the main character is less open and more closed up and quiet. Still the show impresses me again and again. Airing every Saturday and Sunday on OCN.

kill-it-poster-ocn-9

As for non Korean shows: check out Shadowhunters. It is in its last season and I have no idea what ending we are going to get but I’m excited. Also we have Chicago Fire finally back on air, as well as the whole Chicago franchise, except for Chicago Justice of course, but let’s be honest, no one really watched that one…airing every Monday, I think.
We also recently got the new trailer for season 8 of Game of Thrones and it looks interesting. Whether it’s going to be good or not, I’ll leave that to the real fans though. My recent knowledge of GoT comes from wikipedia and people around me, I stopped watching at season 3 or 4, don’t really remember.

My last update, movies: New releases are Dumbo, a movie where even my mother decided to watch it with me, so while I’m visiting on vacation, we’ll go watch it. Therefore I have no opinion on it yet. Maybe I’ll post a review though, after watching it. The pre-sales for Avengers Endgame have started, guys!!! I’m gonna watch this movie even if I’m totally angry at the producers for the ending in the last movie. Also there is the new movie Shazam!…I really don’t know what to think of that movie. Okay, no, I know what to think of it. It may be a super hero movie but don’t take it as one, take it as a comedy or a parody…because if you take it like that it is definitely awesome ^.^
We also have Pet Sematary and I already promised my college friend I’ll go with him, so I cannot say anything about that one yet. I’m just happy he accepted to watch this one instead of The Curse of La Llorona…seriously I think I’d scream in the cinema for the first time if I had to watch that one. I just hope Pet Sematary still allows me to sleep later on.
Oh and we also got the new trailer for Annabelle Comes Home, the third installment of the Annabelle series. I’ve watched the previous two and while I nearly fainted and couldn’t sleep after I’m probably gonna watch this one too…the trailer is actually really interesting and while really scary the Conjuring franchise does feature some of the best story telling in the whole horror genre, imo. The only thing I’m not looking forward to? The Warren’s managed to survive two Conjuring movies…I don’t think their luck stretches to another one…
Oh, and did you see the newest trailer for Aladdin? I know it’s coming in May but still…I watch the trailer pretty much three times a week since I’m so in love with it ^.^ I love how they solved the animation of all the musical songs and how Will Smith adds a little bit of a modern humor to the Genie. I did not start out watching the English version of Aladdin so while I did love Robin Williams, I never got as engaged in it as some other fans who watched the English version first. Aladdin is one of my two favourite Disney movies (the other being The Lion King) so yes, I am overly excited! Release date May 24th.

So…that’s it. Now you should be up-to-date with everything. Sorry that there won’t be a review or so this week, but I wanna enjoy my vacation XP

Review: The Gifted (Thailand)

Note, I am not talking about the US series The Gifted but the 2018 series from Thailand. That series is also NOT a remake or reboot or something from the US series. They are totally separate things and having nothing to do with each other. They just share the same name.

I still remember when The Gifted aired. I was watching a different show at the time and really had a different impression from The Gifted than what the show actually is and so I didn’t watch it even though it features one of my favourite actors.

I don’t really know how big of a hit or a flop it was but I can only say: to everyone who watched it, I seriously doubt it could be anything but amazing. The Gifted managed to get into my all-time favourite TV series worldwide list. No kidding, I mean it. It’s like with wedding dresses, you never think the first one could be the right one. With this show I didn’t think it could be one of my favourites after just two days but yes, it is. So let’s get deeper into what the series is about.

Note: I will not really mention the reality criticism behind the show since I’m neither from Thailand nor do I know much about their education system, so I’m not here to judge their system. I’m just here to judge and review the show 🙂

Note 2: the first part of the post is without spoilers but when the spoilers start, I will put a notice!

The Gifted – General

The Gifted is a 2018 Thai TV series that aired from August ’til November on GMMTV. It consists of 13 episodes and is available with English subs on the official GMMTV channel on Youtube (See Here). It is based on a Thai movie called The Gifted that came out in 2015 and that is known to criticize the Thai education system where academic success trumps everything else and unfair treatment directly relates to it (by the way, I’m not saying it is like that, I’m just saying they portray it like that). I have not watched the movie yet so I cannot tell you how that one is though.

The show has four directors according to mydramalist: O Patha Thongpan (ThirTEEN Terrors; Malee: The Series), Waasuthep Ketpetch (ThirTEEN Terrors; Malila: The Farewell Flower), Dome Jarupat Kannula (The Golden Hand Chef) and Sand Dhammarong Sermrittirong (The Gifted – movie; The Golden Hand Chef). Don’t ask me how these four seemingly totally different people got together but I compliment them on making such an amazing show.

The premise

The story is about a school that not only has the usual classes separated by years but also separates them in 8 different classes. Class 1 is academically the best and they get the best equipment, preferential treatment as well as an earlier lunch break so they get more food. Class 8 gets the worst equipment, worst rooms and has the latest lunch break when almost nothing is left. Once a semester the school holds a placement test and some students are chosen to also participate in the Gifted class, a special additional class everyone wants to get into. Pang, a student of Class 8, isn’t really keen on being the best, he just wants the unfair treatment to stop but he gets the shock of his life when he gets called to the Gifted class after the test. And since all students from the Gifted class are from Classes 1, 2 and 3, he feels like the black sheep and like he doesn’t belong. Well, soon the 10 students of the class discover that there might be a different reason they got into the Gifted class than what they originally thought.

The Cast

The cast consists of quite a few actors and actresses you might know from other shows, if you keep up to date with GMMTV shows in general.

nanon2

There is Nanon Korapat Kirdpan (Oh in My Dear Loser Series: Edge of 17; S in Senior Secret Love Series) as our main protagonist Pang. He’s also gonna star in the 2019 upcoming series Blacklist (so excited for that!!). He plays the main lead who acts less like a hero than I would have expected in the beginning but is pretty much the only one really trying to change the system and realising how wrong it is. Pang, the character, does kind of have a naive perspective but he is still a teenager so you cannot really be mad at him for it. Also he does not kid himself into total naive thinking but knows when he has to play it smart.

Also we have the other gifted students:

chimon

Chimon Wachirawit Ruangwiwat (Sun in My Dear Loser: Edge of 17 and Our Skyy) as Wave. He’s currently starring as Prince in He’s Coming To Me. While he acted as the nice kid in other shows this time he is kind of the main lead’s enemy, although not the main antagonist. For me he really hit it home since with this role he really convinced as the bad guy while I’m only used to him as a good guy.

lilly4

Lilly Apichaya Thongkham (Bell in The Promise; Snoopy in Love Songs Love Series) as Namtarn. This girl is sixteen. Yes you heard right. I have never been so surprised. I mean you do notice she is still young and does not have as much acting experience as some others but she still has solid acting. She plays Namtarn, another naive thinker who loves the gifted class and would do everything do be there. She is also close friends with Pang and Ohm.

jane

Jane Ramida Jiranorraphat (White in Part Time: The Series) as Claire. She also starred in the main role in My Dear Loser: Edge of 17. A lot of people criticized her in My Dear Loser, although not just because of her acting but also because the role was…well, not that great. Well, in this show she plays a totally different character. Claire is a pretty girl who loves to stick it in other people’s faces that she’s better than them. But over time you see that she is still a normal girl. I loved her chemistry with Gun as Punn (see below). While I was kind of on the edge about them being something like a couple in the show, I was convinced during watching and totally rooted for them. Also her acting improved soooo much!

gun8

Gun Atthaphan Phunsawat (Rome in Senior Secret Love Series and Our Skyy) as Punn. If you don’t know him, you did not spend much time on this website or with GMMTV shows, especially not in the BL sector. He also acted in the show ThirTEEN Terrors and is starring in the upcoming 2019 show Theory of Love. Gun has proven multiple times over the years that he can act and in this show it is no different. While GMMTV does have a steady cast of good young actors now that can act convincingly, I do think there are not that many that could have pulled of Punn. He is a perfect guy that can pretty much do anything but is also under a lot of pressure from the people around him. I loved how he definitely had a weakness for Claire and suddenly became sweet every time she was there.

sing

Sing Harit Cheewagaroon (Per in Love Sick The Series; Din in Senior Secret Love Series) as Ohm. While he’s not starred in many main lead roles he has appeared in soooo many other shows as a recurring character. From Slam Dance the Series to the My Dear Loser series. Currently he’s starring as Khiaokem in He’s Coming To Me. He’s proven over time that he really developed as an actor and while the kind of characters he plays do not change much he shows that he can show a wide range of emotions. I think in regards to GMMTV actors he definitely had the best development. He started awkward and can now convince in his role. He plays Ohm, Pang’s new friend in the gifted class with a lot of humor and who wants to make the class laugh and have a good time but tends to lose his things all the time.

fiat6.jpg

Fiat Pattadon Janngeon (Graph in Slam Dance The Series; Dae in Sotus S: The Series) as Korn. He’s also appeared in a lot of shows as a supporting actor and will star in the upcoming 2019 show A Gift For Whom You Hate. For me his acting was really good and nice but I really did not like his character. His character was kind of annoying but turned around in the end and kind of got more likeable. But you notice that it is his character that was the problem because his acting was convincing and emotional.

puimek

Puimek Napasorn Weerayuttvilai (Ainam in My Dear Loser: Edge of 17; Khao Fang in Sotus S: The Series) as Mon. She’s also appeared in a few other shows and will star with Fiat in the 2019 show A Gift For Whom You Hate. She has also acted in a lot of shows I watched and I think his one is her best. She definitely developed well as an actress and shows that she can play serious characters too.

These are all the main actors and mainly featured gifted students. Most of them you should know from My Dear Loser: Edge of 17 and ThirTEEN Terrors.

But now, after this long list of actors, let’s get to the real review.

SPOILERS AHEAD – I won’t spoil the ending though!

The story – best pacing but no surprises

One thing that can cost you viewers is the pacing of a story. Some people dislike slow storytelling, some dislike if it is too fast and too many things happening at the same time. Well, The Gifted found a good solution for it. There is a general story line underlying everything but it features a lot of minor story lines that get resolved (at least to some degree) quite fast but feature as a good distraction from the main story line not really going anywhere for some episodes. The main story line is an underlying element for the whole 13 episodes but only really shows up as the highlight in the last 2 episodes. That doesn’t mean you’re totally surprised by it, no, not at all. You kind of feel the main story in all the episodes but it is necessary to feature all the other story lines of the characters too. Like this you get to know them better and start understanding them and their actions. So, like all of the characters above get an episode to their own (except for Pang, but let’s get to that later) and to show how they struggle and try to persevere in life.

And since the stories are only one episode long and always kind of connected to the main story, the story moves forward quite well.

Scenes, amazing – surprises, not really

The show does have some scenes where they just…well, talk for some time, but the show manages to underline it with sounds and with camera angles that make it interesting and show you that even the small details are important. So even when they have a five minute conversation (as in five minutes of the episode), you don’t get bored. In general, the show features a lot of impressive scenes and camera angles that make things even more exciting.

At the same time the show does not feature a lot of surprises. You can kind of guess what is gonna happen later on (except for the ending) and you never REALLY get surprised by anything. But while this does sound boring, it is not in The Gifted. Like I said the execution of the show is different to what you usually get and even if you knew something was gonna happen you are still impressed with how it IS happening. The images and camera work of the show is just amazing.

Let’s breath for a moment – humor

Note that the show is quite heavy. I mean, if you seriously think about it, it does feature a lot of serious topics and a lot of underlying meaning. That goes from bullying, unfair treatment and jealousy to straight-up murder. Yes, the show is no joke. Also the atmosphere of the show is quite dark. And just when you think it is too much, they put in a little bit of humor or just a normal scene with no underlying meaning but mainly as a filler, so your nerves won’t explode from all the seriousness and heaviness of the show. You might think, does it fit? Well, it does. Mainly because they start it from episode one and don’t really stop with this system until the end and stay true to it, also it’s not really a forced humor but it fits the show well. Also a lot of these scenes are there to really hit it home that these kids might be gifted and fight against an unfair system but also, they are still teenagers. They are not perfect, they are partly still kids but maybe exactly that is what makes them perfect for fighting this system.

The Gifted (SPOILERS AHEAD!*)

*for this paragraph

So, here a spoiler, that I also gave myself to watch this show: the gifted students are in the Gifted class because they have special powers. I won’t spoil Pang’s powers, but I will tell you that his are the most powerful and important, and I do think it matches him well. It is funny how the show gave the students powers that match the characteristics of the characters well. I mean they do mention that the powers match their personalities but they really kept with the concept. For Pang, I think his powers match very well, regarding the fact that he wants to change the system and the people living in it. He wants to make people believe in a better world and wants to change it so everyone can live with fair treatment. As for the others, their powers matched very well and I loved the fact that the potentials they had also hinted at some of them having a more evolved version. I mean, we get to know that Pang can evolve his powers but you also see that the others start getting better at what they do.
One thing I really appreciated: Compared to other shows featuring people with special powers, the potentials in The Gifted had a real dark side too. It wasn’t just “gifted powers make us different, so we can’t be with others” but there was a real disadvantage to their powers. From Wave suffering physically when using his techno-pathy, people going crazy when interacting too closely with Mon, to Punn developing multiple personalities when copying too many talents. The potentials weren’t just powers but came with their own advantages and disadvantages.

Episode 13 – ending (spoiler free)

Soooo, episode 13…yeah, I spend the whole episode hoping and glued to the screen trying to guess how it would end. I hoped for a happy ending since I hate bad endings. Well, I won’t tell you how it ended and if I got my wish but I will tell you: The ending matches the show well and fits into the story. If it ended differently I don’t think the show would be as good as it is. Also it left space for a second season!!! Yay!
And while I did say, there are no surprises, well there are a lot of things that happen in episode 13, that I already knew beforehand but the ending itself…I had no idea, at all. That was probably the biggest surprise of the show!

The casting and acting

In my opinion the casting was done perfectly and the acting really hit it home. Not only Nanon in the main role but also all of the others really convinced as their roles. There were no scenes where you’re like “this doesn’t really match”. No, everything matches well. I do have to give the best compliments to Nanon for his overall role, Chimon for portraying so many different emotions and naturally going from one to another and Gun for episode 5. These three really did amazingly. And really notice that Nanon acted in a lot of different roles.

Now the bad stuff

Like every other show and movie, there are things that did not go as well as others. For The Gifted I have two things to criticize: First off, where is Pang’s background story? You do get a glimpse from time to time, like him calling home or when he interacts with his friend from class one. But other than that, the others got an episode about their background and how they became who they are now but he didn’t. I really don’t know why but I really hope we get a second season and see more of his upcoming.
The other minus of the show, the last three episodes had a little bit of a strange pacing. Just when you thought it would go faster now it slowed down and just when it picked up its pace it slowed down again. I cannot even really say if they should have cut some scenes or added more. I’m so confused by it, I cannot really say. It does not ruin the ending though since the last 30 minutes of the show go quite well again, so don’t worry, they did not ruin the ending.

Pleaseeee, give us a season 2!

So, we are at the end of the review. I know this time I had to say a lot of good stuff, but I think that’s a good thing. I really enjoyed the show and watched it in 2-3 days. I did wait some time to write this review though since I didn’t want to be in a watching high when writing it. Some time after watching it’s always easier to see clearly than right after the show.
Now, I can just hope for a season 2 since the show is still and will continue to be in my all-time favourite shows. Please, please, please give us a season 2, GMMTV!!!

Ending notice: I just loved the opening of the show. I seldomly rewatch openings but with this one I did. The opening just gives such an eerie but exciting feeling, hehe.

I really recommend watching the show, it is definitely worth it. It is not your typical teen drama show but also not your typical supernatural show. The atmosphere of the show in general is mysterious and totally different from what I thought it would be. I really recommend the series!
