Review: 2 Moons 2

Before I start writing anything about this series: this review will contain spoilers. Not too many but it will talk about some plot points of the series so if you don’t want to know any spoilers at all, you should not read this. If you don’t care or have already watched it, have at it. Enjoy!

GENERAL

2 Moons 2 is the second season or reboot or whatever you want to name it, of the popular 2 Moons series. Before it aired there was SO MUCH backlash for the new cast, I can only compliment them for working through it and doing their best 🙂 The series consists of 12 episodes and stars mainly newbie actors with some exceptions, I think.

The story is mainly about Wayo, a college freshman who gets to attend the same college as his idol and high school crush Phana. Together with his best friend Ming and the engineering faculty senior Forth he starts pulling some heart strings in the popular college doctors-to-be gang of Phana, Kit and Beam.

THE NEW CAST

…is amazing. While in the beginning people had some problems getting on board with the new cast, we all totally went for them in the end. I mean they are not just adorable but really good and present us with our beloved 2 Moons 2 characters in a totally new way. I definitely loved it. We got new dynamics between the characters and saw sides to them we didn’t know about.

So sure, it had a rocky start. The acting was more than just a little bit awkward in the beginning but it got better and better. 2M2 is one of those shows that show you that believing in them and not giving up watching can also result in something great. The actors got better each episode and showed a big range of emotions. We got the famous scene where Phana realizes that Wayo is not just similar to his (secret) high school crush but is actually the guy he fell in love with years before (and immediately becomes depressed cause calling someone ‘shorty’ doesn’t leave the best impression on someone you might like). Since the producers retold season 1 in like the first four episodes of this one (so it is more like a reboot than a second season, I guess) we get some new content and a lot of the novel’s plot lines that have not been explored yet. Some serious drama I have to say and while we all disliked seeing our little cutie Wayo like this, you really have to praise Earth’s acting in Wayo’s break down scene.

Big compliments to the producers and the actors for also including some serious time with Wayo’s Angel’s gang friends who were only comic relief before but had some serious story time in this one. However dramatic they may be, we all wanted an Angel’s gang at our side when seeing how caring they were for Wayo.

Overall, the cast did a really good job and gave life to the characters from the novel.

THE PRODUCTION

I know this all sounds like a long post of praise. Do not worry. I also have some criticism. Mainly about the production. I know episodes 1 til 4 are a re-telling of the previous season but tbh the production of them lacks a lot. The moment it is not a re-telling anymore the production quality and story pace gets like 50% better and finally to a standard you won’t get annoyed with. I don’t know whether the producers just thought they didn’t really need to put that much work into a story people already knew or if there just wasn’t enough time to work on the episodes until the series got released.

So that was number one. Number two is something that is really noticeable in episodes 1 to 4 but pops up every now and then in the rest of the series too. I don’t know who did the sound production for the show but please…if you want to add drama, choose wisely what scenes get music and what scenes won’t. There were so many scenes that were just…quiet. There was no real dialogue and also no background music or sounds, making the whole scene a little bit awkward. They had problems with that even until the last episode although I admit that they got better over time. Still, please, do not continue that way. Even if it is really quiet music, just add something!

Otherwise the production quality is as expected. The colors are nice, the details are lovely and the props are satisfying.

THE STORY

While watching the start of 2M2 I actually read the novel and let me just tell you, I would’ve never thought for them to follow it so detailed. Sure, there are some changes and there are scenes from the novel they kind of mixed together in the series, although I think that is because after all, it is a series and not a novel.

In general it is nice to see the story develop around our beloved characters. While I know that some may not like that there were some episodes that were devoted to one or at most two couples and just kind of skipped over the third couple, I do understand the choice. It helps emphasizing with the characters and getting into the story. Also someone mentioned that the chemistry was off in some episodes. I don’t think that is the case though. I did notice that since sometimes a couple had no real story in an episode, it wasn’t mentioned much so maybe that was why some thought the chemistry was odd.

The cast did really well though and the chemistry was really lovely and sweet.

OVERALL

Overall, 2M2 deserves full praise from my side. It is not perfect, but in this day and age, what is? The cast did an amazing job and the producers showed us that sometimes strange decisions may really be for the best of the series and we should trust them more. I can only look forward to seeing season 3! After that kind of ending, there needs to be a third one…so, I’ll definitely look forward to that 🙂
